Man who damaged cars with forklift arrested
A MAN who drove a forklift truck and deliberately overturned four vehicles, including two police cars, was arrested for disrupting public order, prosecutors in the Pudong New Area said yesterday.
Prosecutors said the suspect, surnamed Ma, bore a grudge against law enforcement officials who demolished illegal structures built by him.
On June 2, Pudong police, town government and urban management officials dismantled an illegal structure in Zhuqiao Town after their previous efforts to get Ma to demolish it himself failed.
After it was forcibly demolished, an enraged Ma drove a forklift and damaged four vehicles.
He then got off the truck to fetch a gas cylinder from his residence and threatened to blow himself up along with the officers. However, the police officers managed to overcome him finally.
Ma caused economic losses of more than 20,000 yuan (US$3,222) during the incident.
Although Ma has a history of mental illness, medics from city’s mental health center said he was not suffering from any mental disorders at the time of the incident.
