Man who knifed 3 to receive treatment
A MAN who stabbed three people at random on Nanjing Road has been ordered to undergo compulsory medical treatment.
The 37-year-old attacker, surnamed Zhang, has a history of mental illness, Huangpu District People’s Court said yesterday.
Zhang, from neighboring Anhui Province, was taken into custody after he ran amok, slashing and stabbing passersby on the pedestrianized Nanjing Road E. in April.
While Zhang’s violent actions seriously harmed public security, testimonies and Zhang’s medical assessment showed that he could not be held responsible due to his mental condition, said the court.
According to a report by experts at East China University of Political Science and Law, Zhang suffers from schizophrenia and is not capable of standing trial, the court said.
The court approved the procuratorate’s application to send Zhang for compulsory medical treatment.
Former chef Zhang walked to the entrance of a shopping center at the intersection of Xizang Road and Nanjing Road at 12:30pm on April 17, and produced a knife, claiming someone wanted to harm him, the court heard.
Security camera footage showed Zhang run toward a stranger and stab him in the face, chest and legs.
He then stabbed a second victim in the head.
Next Zhang attacked traffic assistant Fan Jiang, who was slashed on the face three times. Fan tried to fend Zhang off with his belt before help arrived.
