Man who raped pregnant woman jailed for 5 years

A food delivery man who raped a pregnant client in her rental home in the Pudong New Area has been sentenced by the area’s court to five years in jail.

Prosecutors said the defendant, surnamed Yu, 24, had planned to rob the victim surnamed Li, 25. He went to Li’s apartment last November 25 on the pretext of needing a paper signed for goods ordered by Li. She signed and closed the door.

Angered by her reaction, Yu knocked on the door again and when Li opened it, he forced her into a bedroom, bound her hands with his belt and bashed her on the head with his motorbike U-lock.

Li, who was three months’ pregnant, didn’t resist her attacker, at which point Yu decided on impulse to rape her, prosecutors said. He later took nude photos of Li.

However, he was disturbed by a friend of Li who was knocking on the front door. Li took her chance to open the door, calling for help. Her friend, a man surnamed Yuan, fought with Yu who managed to escape by biting Yuan’s fingers, prosecutors added.

Police were called and hospital checks showed Li had suffered bruises all over her body and that Yuan’s knuckles were injured.

Yu fled to his hometown in east China’s Jiangxi Province but handed himself over to local police a week later.

Prosecutors said that in December 2012 Yu was sentenced to two years and eight months behind bars for theft. He was freed in February 2015. He then came to Shanghai and was later employed by the food courier firm Huoju.
