Man who sold his son on trial

A 30-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with fraud for selling his son and then stealing him, the Baoshan District People’s Procuratorate said yesterday.

Liu Xiaoming surrendered to police in Baoshan District on January 19 this year, but prosecutors said Liu denied he had intentionally planned to cheat the couple who paid to adopt his son.

Liu, who lives in Nantong City in Jiangsu Province, claimed he sent his younger son away after a quarrel with his wife. He brought him back later.

Prosecutors said Liu actually sold his son to the unnamed couple for 52,000 yuan (US$8,380). He had met them with the boy at a hotel in Baoshan District on December 17 last year.

The couple got in touch with Liu after he put up the child for adoption on an Internet forum on December 9, saying his family could no longer afford to raise him.

But with the boy now sold, Liu said he was under huge pressure from his wife who threatened to kill him if he did not bring their son back.

He told her that the boy was being taken care of in Shanghai by a nanny, the prosecutors said.

Following sustained pestering from his wife, Liu visited the couple at their home in Hangzhou on December 19 and took the child back on the pretext that he needed to be present at his grandmother’s funeral.

Confronted by the couple later, Liu not only refused to pay back the money he had taken from them, but instead demanded they pay up additional 14,500 yuan as the official rates for adoption were much higher.
