Man wins case against 5-star hotel
A MAN who was told to pay half of the contracted amount for canceling his wedding banquet at a local five-star hotel has won a lawsuit with the court saying the amount demanded by the hotel was unreasonably high.
The court ordered the man to pay 15 percent of the amount.
The plaintiff, surnamed Cui, said he reserved a wedding banquet at the Shanghai Highton Hotel in March 2012.
He signed a contract with the hotel in April and paid half of the total amount, about 21,300 yuan, in August.
The wedding was scheduled for September but Cui canceled the event after he broke off with his girlfriend. The hotel demanded half the amount as penalty, saying it suffered losses but the court found the losses negligible. It ordered the hotel to return 14,969 yuan to Cui.
