Man with guns gets 12 years in jail
A MAN was sentenced to 12 years in prison yesterday for possessing and selling guns and ammunition.
Cui Yanan possessed 23 guns and nearly 300,000 bullets and was sentenced by Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court.
Gao Pingjun, who purchased an air gun and more than 1,000 bullets from Cui, was sentenced to two years in prison with probation of two years for the same crime.
Cui, 33, from Shandong Province, only sold the one gun, the court heard.
They pleaded guilty at yesterday's hearing with Cui even bursting into tears.
He told the court he didn't expect such serious punishment even though he knew selling guns was illegal. He said he regretted his crime and thanked police for stopping him.
Cui, a university graduate, couldn't find a satisfactory job in the city and decided to start his own business by opening an online store to sell guns and lead pellets.
He bought 23 air guns and nearly 300,000 lead pellets from others. He then issued ads online to attract buyers, the court heard.
He sold an air gun for 4,900 yuan (US$724) and more than 1,000 lead pellets to Gao in January.
Police tracked the online deal and caught Cui on January 16.
