Manhole cover causes traffic chaos in tunnel
A MULTI-VEHICLE pile-up involving as many as 20 cars at the Xizang Road Tunnel brought the morning rush hour traffic to a halt for almost two hours yesterday.
An uneven manhole cover first slashed the tire of a car at 7:24am. It however managed to drive out of the tunnel. But only few minutes later, another car hit the same manhole cover.
By the next hour, dozens of vehicles were either involved in rear-end collisions or bumped each other as they tried to dodge the car and the uprooted manhole cover.
No man was hurt.
The tunnel at the Pudong end was closed at 8:10am to clear the damaged vehicles.
Full traffic resumed only about two hours later.
According to the city’s traffic command center, the manhole cover in the center of the tunnel was part of the tunnel’s drainage system. The tunnel maintenance department is responsible for managing the cover, the center said.
