Manslaughter charge after deadly taxi fight

A 21-YEAR-OLD worker from Chongqing who allegedly stabbed another man to death in a fight over a taxi has been arrested on a charge of manslaughter, Minhang District prosecutors said today.

Prosecutors said both fighters had made mistakes and warned young people to be rational in disputes.

On the early morning of April 17, the victim Yu Cheng came out of a pub on Lianhua Road with two girlfriends, wanting to call a taxi home. When a Qiangsheng taxi stopped in front of them, the suspect Lu Fang, who had just come off duty from a hotel, rushed out and climbed into the taxi first.

Yu shouted at Lu for occupying the taxi but another taxi came and Yu's friends persuaded him to take that instead.

However Yu, who was a little drunk, was still angry and kept rapping on the car window with his fist. After several hundred meters, Yu saw the other taxi stop alongside, prosecutors said.

He left his cab to open the door and grab Lu with the intention of beating him. Yu's friends told the driver that they were sure he could defeat the other man as he was very strong, prosecutors said.

But when he returned to the taxi, Yu was bleeding all over and soon lost consciousness. The taxi driver ran the victim to hospital immediately.

Doctors found several cuts on Yu's chest and belly and he later died from massive bleeding.
