Marathon showcases Huangpu riverside
THIS year’s Shanghai International Marathon will be held on November 18, organizers announced on yesterday.
The number of runners will be reduced to 25,000 from last year’s 28,000, but the number of runners in the 10 and 5.5-kilometer events will be increased to 6,000 and 7,000.
This year’s marathon will start from the Bund and end at Shanghai Stadium, passing along the newly opened Huangpu riverside. Toward the end of the course, instead of the challenging Longteng Bridge, runners will go down Longteng Avenue. A blue line on the ground will help the runners follow the correct route.
Interested runners can sign up at shmarathon.com or via the marathon’s official app from 10am on August 24 to 5pm on August 28.
Elite runners will be entered automatically after paying the entry fee. This year, 500 slots will be reserved for runners who donate 3,000 yuan (US$440) to a charity that funds sports at a school in Yunnan Province.
Others will be selected by a draw on September 6.
Using facial recognition technology, organizer will provide a 10-second video for each runner of moments from their race.
The marathon attracts around 6,000 overseas competitors every year. The website now has Japanese and English versions. German and French interfaces will follow soon.
