Maritime official ‘lax’ over leak
A MARITIME official has been charged with dereliction of duty over a chemical leak from a ship that left 46 people hospitalized.
Prosecutors said yesterday that a director with Jinshan District Marine Department, surnamed Luan, was lax in managing a seal for issuing dangerous goods certificates, letting any officer use it.
According to prosecutors, this allowed a vessel to be loaded with dangerous petrochemical C9 in a dock not qualified for handling it.
More than 52 tons of C9 leaked into Jueshigang Creek due to a faulty valve on January 10, severely polluting the creek and the Huangpu River, tainting tap water supplies.
Losses from the incident were put at 4.8 million yuan (US$781,920).
