Meat, dairy firms urged to film their operations
COMPANIES involved in the manufacture or processing of baby formula, meat or dairy products are being encouraged to install surveillance cameras in their factories, the city’s food safety watchdog said yesterday.
The appeal comes in the wake of the scandal last year involving Shanghai Husi Food, which was found to have supplied substandard meat products to fast food companies like McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King.
While installing the cameras is not compulsory, Gu Zhenghua, vice director of the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration, told a press conference yesterday that firms in high-risk sectors are being urged to comply.
The cameras are “a good way to detect food safety problems,” he said.
School canteens and food delivery companies are being encouraged to take similar safety steps, Gu said.
Four Shanghai manufacturers of baby formula have installed cameras in their raw-material and production areas, footage from which can be viewed by the administration as required, he said.
The watchdog is keen to have a comprehensive camera system, through which it can monitor firms as it chooses. The administration will provide guidance on where the cameras should be installed, and how the system should be managed, Gu said.
Some firms are willing to have the cameras fitted to prove they have sound management practices, he claimed.
Six executives from Shanghai Husi Food were arrested in August for their roles in the high-profile meat scandal.
The case is being handled by the city’s judicial authorities, Gu said, without providing any additional information.
