Mediators help resolve medical disputes
CHANGNING District government received over 250 medical disputes this year and resolved 85 percent of the cases since it established a mediation commission in 2012, said Li Weiqing, deputy director of the district’s Judicial Bureau.
The commission has recruited retired lawyers and doctors to play mediators in the disputes. Li said the success of the commission may lead to the establishment of similar bodies in other districts soon.
Li cited the example of a recent case in which a patient from out of Shanghai asked dozens of people from his village to surround a public hospital in the district for compensation after he was paralyzed after a surgery.
The commission invited medical experts to evaluate the surgery. A compensation agreement was reached and the villagers dispersed.
