Medical fraudsters sentenced

THREE men were sentenced after being found guilty of defrauding six victims out of 1.7 million yuan (US$US274,210), the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.
The ringleader of the trio, a man identified by the court only by the surname Li, received 12 years. The two other men, surnamed Yan and Lai, received 11 and eight years respectively. All three are in their 20s and hail from east China’s Jiangxi Province.
According to prosecutors, the men convinced their victims to purchase phoney drugs as well as related medical products and services after illegally obtaining their medical records.
The court told Shanghai Daily that most of these drugs were made by the perpetrators and sold to their victims as traditional Chinese medicines.
One of the six victims, a man from Shanghai surnamed Chen who suffers from a hearing impairment, received a phone call in June 2013, from one of the scammers, who identified himself as a doctor at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Chen agreed to purchase medicines offered by the caller and also prepaid 400,000 yuan for a surgical procedure.
Later, Chen called Peking Union and was unable to reconnect with the individual he had spoken with. Suspecting fraud, Chen contacted the police.
Elsewhere, a man in central China’s Henan Province was also cheated, transferring over 800,000 yuan to the gang between October 2013 and February 2014. Two other victims were bilked out of 130,000 yuan and 90,000 yuan respectively.
