Medics left gauze in mother after labor

SHANGHAI East Hospital yesterday confirmed an incident that a piece of gauze was found left in the birth canal of a 27-year-old mother a month after she gave birth to a baby girl at the hospital.

The mother, surnamed Xu, delivered her baby naturally at the hospital’s branch in Pudong’s Sanlin area on January 20, and left the hospital four days later.

However, she began suffering from pain in her lower body over the following month, and was told by medics at the hospital after an examination on February 20 that a piece of gauze, which was used to stem bleeding during labor, had been carelessly left in her birth canal. It was taken out and the hospital apologized to her.

Shanghai East Hospital said in a statement Xu experienced pain and unusual secretions from her lower body after leaving the hospital, and went back for a check on February 3.

However, a type-B ultrasonic check at the hospital did not detect anything abnormal, and she was treated for a suspected inflammatory condition.

According to the hospital, managers held talks with Xu and her relatives on March 3, and agreed to give her financial compensation.

According to Xu’s sister-in-law, the hospital offered a compensation of just 2,000 yuan.

However, Xu’s family asked for 150,000 yuan (US$23,160). But the hospital said the claim had surpassed the maximum of 30,000 yuan which the hospital has the authority to decide for compensation.

The hospital said it had reported the case to the Pudong New Area’s medical disputes mediation commission, and would punish those responsible.

Medical staff are required to count and make sure all the pieces of gauze used during an operation are removed.

“In our first negotiation session, the hospital said we could ask for any amount,” Xu told Shanghai Daily. “Without knowing the standard, we said 150,000 yuan, which was rejected.”

Xu’s sister-in-law said her family did not want to bring the case to court, as it would be a time-consuming process.

“We will wait for the hospital to approach us again because 2,000 yuan is far too little.”
