Men jailed for stealing money on a bus
Two men who stole money from a woman’s handbag on a bus and threatened the driver with knives were sentenced to prison and fined 15,000 yuan (US$2,451) each for robbery, Jing’an District People’s Court said yesterday.
Prosecutors said the two thieves in their 40s were unemployed and from Shaoyang City in Hunan Province. In January, they planned to steal some money to go back to their hometown for the Spring Festival.
They first tried on a bus from Shanghai to Yueqing City in Zhejiang Province on January 19. They failed to find a suitable target. The next day they took a bus back to Shanghai and targeted a well-dressed middle-aged woman with a Fendi bag.
After most passengers fell asleep, one of the thieves cut the bag with a knife and stole a wallet containing 1,900 yuan and some valuables.
When the woman woke at 4am, she found the hole in her bag and some valuables missing. She cried there were thieves on the bus. A passenger said it was the two sitting beside her who stole the money.
The thieves put the money on another woman’s seat immediately and walked toward the door to get off the bus.
They threatened the driver with knives after he refused to stop the bus and let them off. The thieves then grabbed the steering wheel and slammed on the brake. They forced the door open and fled.
They were caught in Shanghai four days later.
One was jailed nine-and-a-half years while the other received an eight-year prison term.
