Metal plant makes way for park

A PLOT of land in the village of Youyi, Baoshan District, that was formerly occupied by a metal factory, a waste recycling plant and several other companies, is being reclaimed as a public green space, local authorities said yesterday.
The decision was made in a bid to reduce air and noise pollution in the area, which is rapidly expanding as a residential neighborhood, the district government said.
Local people have longed complained about the foul odors and dust produced by several of the companies on the site, all of which have now been relocated, it said.
The development of the new green area is well under way and should be completed before the end of the month, it said.
The move will be good news for the 1,500 occupants of two new residential developments that opened in the area — a suburb of Yuepu Town — last year.
The five companies that were relocated were Shidongkou Metal Cutting Factory, Fanfeng Refractory Material Co, Aoxiang Logistics Co, Yueluo Environmental Sanitation Co and Shanghai Fuyi Waste Material Recycling Co, the district government said.
The home of the Youyi Village Committee was also relocated to make way for the new development, it said.
