Metro Line 2 services hit by malfunction, reports of fire denied

RUMORS of a fire outbreak on Metro Line 2 turned out to be a false alarm after a malfunction caused a 20-minute delay during the morning rush hour yesterday.

A Weibo netizen posted pictures of smoke coming out of Line 2 subway train at the Jinke Road station yesterday morning, Jiefang Daily reported.

Other netizens confirmed the incident after the fire alarm went off and subway staff ordered passengers to evacuate the platform.

“I heard that a train was on fire. I didn’t see any flames but could definitely smell the smoke,” a woman surnamed Xu told Jiefang Daily.

However, the Metro operator said there was no fire or smoke at the station.

The Metro staff said an incoming train had a system malfunction when its wheels got stuck on the rails, leading to friction and possible smoke at around 9am. The smoke triggered the automatic smoke detector alarm at the station.

Trains departing from the Longyang Road station to Jinke Road station were put on a speed limit.

The incident delayed Line 2 trains for a little over 20 minutes.
