Metro blamed for cracks in buildings
A SAFETY inspection was carried out in two residential blocks on Huake Road in Qingpu District yesterday over complaints that apartments were damaged due to an ongoing Metro project.
On September 11, construction work of an auxiliary bridge for Metro Line 17 was stopped following complaints from residents that their apartments had been damaged by the work.
“We were told the results of the inspection will be released on October 8, after the National Day holiday. A decision will be taken later,” a resident, Wei Jundi, told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
The complaints mainly came from blocks 38, 39 and 31. The first two blocks, which share the same building and have a total of 24 households, are only 20 meters away from the construction site.
“We were watching television in the living room the other day when we suddenly heard a big noise from the balcony. Three tiles just came off the ceiling,” said Wei, who lives in flat 302 in block 39. “Many of our neighbors were complaining about similar damages to their apartments, so we approached the district government.”
Gao Bingqian, who lives in flat No. 102, pointed out to a 40-centimeter crack on the marble base of his bedroom window. There were cracks below the window as well and in other places in his house.
“The machines they use are very powerful ... you can feel the floor shaking when they are working. When we are having lunch, my elbows shake by the pounding noise,” the 66-year-old Gao said.
There were damages below the stairs in front of the gate of block 39.
The local neighborhood committee said they had received complaints from 25 households from blocks 131, 137, 138, 139, 141, 153 and 154 since July.
Some of the residents have complained directly to the construction company as well.
Wei blames the piling work of Zhonghengjing Bridge, which uses high-frequency vibration technology.
An official with the construction company said it was possible that vibration can affect other structures nearby but added, “it could also be because it is an old building.”
“That is why we have asked the district housing management office to commission a third party company to check the situations of the buildings,” the official surnamed Chi said.
He said if it was proved that the damages were caused by the construction work, the company would pay for repairs.
The inspection company, Tongfeng Project Consulting Firm, evaluated blocks 38 and 39 yesterday but refused to comment.
Chi said there were three construction projects going on around the area — the bridge, the Metro station and sewage reconstruction work. He said his company was only responsible for the work on the bridge which started on September 3.
“We bought this apartment in 2008 with our savings. We are retired now and don’t have money to buy a new home if the safety of the building is really affected,” Wei said.
“Nobody would even want to buy it in the first place.”
