Metro commuters swindled
FIVE people who allegedly swindled subway passengers by pretending to be security staff and “fining” them for talking on mobile phones while riding on escalators have been detained, the city’s Metro operator said yesterday.
“My friend was fined near Exit 20 at Line 11’s Xujiahui Station,” said a Netizen’s tipoff on the Metro operator’s Weibo account. “The group of people were wearing uniforms and holding signboards. They claimed commuters will face a penalty for using mobile phones on escalators.”
The netizen also posted a picture of the pink receipt for the 10-yuan “fine,” which was issued by the “Shanghai Public Transportation Order Supervision Administration,” adding that the receipt “looks rough and informal.”
Metro staff and Metro police patrolled the station and all of its exits after receiving the report and soon spotted the suspects.
The five non-locals, including four wearing fake uniforms, were caught at the scene. Officers also seized another fake uniform, a stack of penalty receipts and several signboards with them.
According to the police, the four uniformed suspects claimed they were recruited as security guards by the fifth suspect, surnamed Wei, from their hometown. They arrived in the city last Saturday and began to “work” at Xujiahui Station the next morning.
