Metro gets tough on ‘fake’ staff
THE subway operator said yesterday it has received several complaints about people masquerading as Metro volunteers and staff in order to cheat passengers.
The scams take place at the city’s three railway stations, the company said.
“More policemen and Metro staffers have been deployed at those places,” a subway official surnamed Lan told Shanghai Daily.
In one case, a man pretended to be a volunteer and charged passengers 1 yuan (15 US cents) per person for helping them to buy tickets at vending machines.
The person has been detained, though police have not revealed how much money he raised from his criminal activities.
Some “fakes” wait at Exit 2 of Shanghai Railway Station on subway Line 3, which is close to a long-distance bus station, and tell people their train has been canceled, Lan said.
“Then they tell the passenger to cash in their train tickets and take the bus instead,” he said, adding that “some of those buses are unlicensed.”
