Microchip gets ready to receive
A NEW microchip developed by a Shanghai-based company that is capable of receiving signals from China’s Beidou Navigation Satellite System will go into full production later this month.
“The chip is suitable for use in smartphones and tablet computers, and several foreign companies have expressed an interest in it,” said Wang Yongping, general manger of Shanghai Beiga Satellite Technology Co.
He was speaking at a forum held yesterday to discuss the possible military and civil applications of Beidou.
The Shanghai government has been keen to support innovation in the technology sector and numerous companies based in the city have been involved in projects related to the state-of-the-art navigation system.
The Beidou network, which currently comprises 16 satellites, was launched in 2000 and since 2003 has been used to help traffic control, mapping, agriculture, weather forecasting and disaster relief work. Four more satellites are scheduled to be launched later this year, and the network is expected to grow to 35 by 2020.
