Microsoft wins pirate case against local firm

MICROSOFT has won a copyright infringement case against a local technology firm which pre-installed pirated software for free when selling computers to clients.

Shanghai Pengyang Technology was ordered to stop the infringement of copyright and distribution of pirated Microsoft software and pay 290,000 yuan (US$45,647) in compensation, the Huangpu District People's Court ruled yesterday.

Microsoft told the court that it had discovered Pengyang was selling laptops with pre-installed Microsoft software and hired private investigators to collect evidence.

Following this, Microsoft launched a lawsuit against Pengyang in March, demanding compensation of 500,000 yuan for the infringement and 192,540 yuan to cover Microsoft's expenses in buying the computers.

Pengyang claimed clients insisted in installing a pirated edition for testing and it asked them to delete the pirated software afterward.

The court said that Pengyang should refuse clients' request to install pirated software.
