Artery Middle Ring Road broken, repairs underway
A part of the Middle Ring Road has been shut down after a trailer truck carrying tubular piles illegally used the road and overturned on it early this morning, causing severe damage on the road surface.
About 12:10am, the truck carrying dozens precast tubular piles hit the cement wall on the Middle Ring Road near the crossing of Wenshui and Hutai roads. It overturned and caused a number of piles to fall off the road, according to the Shanghai Road Administration Bureau.
The surface of the road was dislocated with a 40-centimeter crack, the bureau said.
No injuries or casualties were reported.
Such trucks are banned from running on the elevated road.
After the accident, the section between Gulang Road and Gonghe Overpass on the Middle Ring Road is off-limits to the traffic, while the crossroad of Wenshui and Hutai roads was also cordoned off.
Repair work is under way and authorities have suggested nearby drivers make a detour.
The driver of the truck, which belongs to Shanghai Jianjing Logistics Co, has been held by the police, who confirmed that he wasn’t driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The case is still under investigation.
