Migrant couple burning joss paper by railway tracks to 'get it reach the dead faster' stopped and warned

FIRE set up by a couple burning joss paper to dead relatives beside the railway tracks in downtown Shanghai was stopped by the police two minutes before a freight train sped by last Sunday evening, police said on Monday.

The incident took place at the railway crossing of Songhu Line at Yixian Road and Hejiawan Road in Yangpu District. A patrol officer spotted the couple burning the joss paper and extinguished the fire in time to avoid likely fire risks to the train.

Considering that the incident didn’t cause consequences, the couple were only warned beforing letting go.

The couple, who are migrant workers from central China’s Henan Province, allegedly told the police that they heard burning joss paper by the railway could “get the money delivered to the deceased faster and thus their spirits would help bless the living.”

Wang Zhaoxi, a police officer from the Yangpu Station of Shanghai railway police, said police had stepped up patrols in the area.
