Migrant ‘doctor’ held for treatment gone wrong
A MIGRANT worker has been detained for illegally practicing medicine that led to the death of a person.
The suspect, surnamed Huang, came to Shanghai in 2005 and worked at construction sites where he gave medical advice and even treated some of his colleagues during his spare time.
He claimed to have studied medicine for three years at a nursing school and did his internship in various departments at a county hospital in his hometown in Anhui Province. Huang also claimed his father practiced medicine at home without license.
In October, a man surnamed Liu felt sick while working at a construction site in Pudong New Area. His colleagues approached Huang, who checked on Liu at his dormitory.
Without checking Liu’s temperature and other symptoms, Huang gave him two bottles of intravenous injection of lincomycin and left.
Witnesses said Liu’s lips started to turn blue when he was receiving his second IV injection. They again called Huang, who found that Liu had no pulse. When an ambulance arrived, Liu was declared dead at the site. His colleagues immediately informed police.
An autopsy report said lincomycin dosages led to a fluctuation in breathing that impacted blood circulation and led to Liu’s death. Huang faces up to 10 years imprisonment for practising medicine without license leading to death.
