Migrant set to go on trial for murder
PROSECUTORS said yesterday that they intend to press murder charges against a man who allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend with a kitchen knife.
The man, surnamed Zhang, 46, from Sichuan Province, was transferred to the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate Prosecutors’ Office and faces life imprisonment or even death sentence.
Two years ago Zhang was in a relationship with a migrant woman, surnamed Liu, helping her to settle down in Songjiang District. But some months later, another man, surnamed Zhao, showed up and claimed to be Liu’s boyfriend. Zhao physically threatened Zhang and even extorted 80,000 yuan (US$12,720) from him.
Zhao even turned up at Zhang’s residence with some men who were all armed with knives.
Zhang felt that both Liu and Zhao took him for a ride. On May 21 last year, Zhang went to their flat with a kitchen knife with the intention of hurting Zhao. But Zhao was not at home. After Liu pleaded with Zhang not to hurt Zhao, an infuriated Zhang attacked her with the knife.
He later surrendered to police.
