Migrant who smashed ATM for food leaves social center

A 20-YEAR-OLD man from Anhui Province, who smashed an ATM machine, to get himself arrested has been sent back to his hometown.
Zhang Yundong, who left his home in Lixin County in Bozhou City on March 9, walked for two days from Zhejiang Province to reach Shanghai but struggled to find work in the city. Hungry and alone, he took the desperate step of smashing an ATM machine in Jinshan on March 15 and then called the police.
He was sent the next day to a local governmental organization that looks after homeless people.
Zhang said he set out for Shanghai with only 100 yuan (US$16). He spent it on bus but could only make it to Zhejiang Province — a step away from his final destination. He then walked for the next two days.
Zhang said he intended to find a job in Shanghai after learning from others that there was money to be made in the city.
Police said Zhang used a cement block to damage the ATM screen and keyboard. He then pressed the police alarm button next to the machine and surrendered himself to the police.
Shen Huanqing, a police officer who handled the incident, said they bought a meal for Zhang at the police station. “We sent him to the Jinshan District social relief center the next day after confirming his identity and the damage report from the bank,” Shen said. He added they did not make a case as the damages to the bank were not serious.
