Millions on the move for the May Day holiday
MILLIONS of people will be on the move by road and rail during the upcoming May Day holiday.
Shanghai’s Road Administration Bureau predicts about 4.4 million vehicles will be using the city’s expressways, a 5 percent rise over the same period last year.
On April 28, the day before the holiday, it is estimated 2.2 million vehicles will use the elevated roads, a 5.5 percent rise from last year, with Yan’an Elevated Road, the Inner Ring Road and the North-South Elevated Road even more congested than usual at evening rush hour.
A 13 percent rise in traffic over normal working days is predicted for the expressways on that day, with the G2, G15, G40, G50 and G60 outbound seeing the most evident increases.
During the holiday, the heaviest congestion is expected from 8am to midday on April 29, and 2pm to 8pm on May 1.
The bureau said the G40 Expressway will be more congested than last year because three major bridges over the Yangtze River in neighboring Jiangsu Province have banned trucks during the three-day break.
From April 29 to May 1, all cars and passenger vehicles with seven seats or less can use the city’s expressways free of charge.
The city’s railway stations, meanwhile, are expecting to see off 1.75 million people during the May Day break, a 3 percent rise over last year.
Shanghai Railway Station said the passenger flow peak will come on April 29 when some 500,000 people leave town.
To meet demand, 72 extra trains will be in service. More trains will be added if needed.
Tickets on trains to nearby regions such as Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces on the mornings of April 28 and 29 are in short supply, as are tickets for Beijing and Tianjin on April 28.
