Minhang set to introduce 20,000 new public bikes

THE transport authority in Minhang District said yesterday it plans to upgrade and expand its entire fleet of public-hire bicycles before the end of September.
About 19,000 bikes have been in service in the district since 2009, though most of them are now in a poor state of repair, it said.
As a result, the authority will introduce 20,000 replacements over the coming months, the first of which went into service recently near Xinzhuang subway station.
The new models are made of an aluminum alloy, making them much lighter and easier to handle than their iron predecessors, come with better quality tires and can be recognized by their new green (as opposed to orange) color scheme.
As well as expanding its fleet, the authority said the bikes will be available at several new service points, mostly in Huacao Town and the Xinhong neighborhood.
The bikes will be strategically located so people can use them to get to and from Metro stations and their homes, officials said.
The hire scheme is open to anyone aged 16 and 65 and operates via personal membership cards.
These can be obtained from any branch of Agriculture Bank of China in Minhang on payment of 300 yuan (US$48), which is used as a deposit and to cover fees.
There is no charge for the first hour of using a public bike, but each additional hour costs 1 yuan.
