Mom, 17, on murder rap

A teenager suspected of strangling her newborn baby in a washroom at her workplace has been charged with murder, prosecutors in Fengxian District said yesterday.

According to prosecutors, a cleaner found the body of the infant girl in a trash can in the toilet block of the women’s dormitory on December 26. It had a strip of cloth around her throat and appeared to have been strangled, they said.

The child’s mother, a 17-year-old surnamed Li, became the prime suspect as she had reported sick on December 26. When questioned by police, she confessed to killing her baby with a piece of cloth torn from a mop head.

Li later told prosecutors that she’d had a relationship with a boy in her hometown in Guizhou Province prior to moving to Shanghai last May.

The teenager, however, was unaware she was pregnant until a colleague commented on the growing bulge in her stomach. She went to a doctor to arrange an abortion, but was declined on medical grounds.

Prosecutors said Li told them that she killed the baby as she could not afford to raise it.
