Mom held over death of toddler in hospital
A WOMAN has been detained on suspicion of beating her 18-month-old daughter who died in hospital on Saturday, police said yesterday.
Police claim the 31-year-old, surnamed Li, said she had beaten the child with a metal coat hanger because she wouldn’t stop crying after her feed.
An autopsy found no evidence to suggest the baby’s death was caused by such an assault.
Police told Shanghai Daily they don’t know who took the infant to hospital. They said only that they were called to Huinan Central Hospital by staff who were concerned about a child admitted on Saturday afternoon.
Nurses said they suspected the infant might have been maltreated, police said.
The girl was transferred to Shanghai Children Medical Center the same day, where she died about 8:30pm.
Zhang Ying, an official from the medical center, said the baby’s heart stopped beating in the ambulance and that medics at the children’s hospital were unable to resuscitate her.
Zhang said that the baby’s father, surnamed Geng, was with the child at the time of her death.
