Mom of baby found in bin goes to police
THE woman who left her newborn son in a garbage bin on Tuesday has turned herself in to the authorities, Shanghai police said yesterday.
The woman, surnamed Song, is being questioned about the case, police said, though they declined to say if she has been charged.
Under China’s criminal law, Song could be sentenced to up to five years in prison for abandoning the child, but experts said she is likely to walk free.
“Her behavior didn’t result in serious consequences for her baby,” said Liu Xianquan, a criminal law professor at East China University of Political Science and Law.
On the other hand, Song could be charged with attempted homicide as the baby’s life could have been in danger if no one had spotted him, Liu said.
“It would have to be ruled that she deliberately left the baby in a place where nobody would find him,” he said.
The baby is being cared for at Songjiang District Central Hospital and is in good health, police said. The infant was found in the bin wrapped in a plastic bag and still had his umbilical cord attached.
