Mom who used 6-year-old daughter to steal iPhone gets 5 months detention

AN unemployed mother who asked her 6-year-old daughter to steal a shop assistant's iPhone in a shopping mall in Yangpu District was sentenced to 5 months detention for theft and fined 1,000 yuan (US$165), Yangpu District People's Court said today.
An accomplice of the mother’s who had suggested using the young girl to steal was given the same penalty by the court.
The mother, surnamed Wu, considered committing thefts with a friend, surnamed Lin, because of money problems. Lin said they could let Wu's daughter steal things to keep from being caught, the court said.
The two then took Wu's daughter to a shopping mall and asked her to steal a shop assistant's iPhone on a desk while they distracted the woman by pretending to shop.
But the theft was immediately discovered by a police officer at the mall and the two were nabbed at the scene.
