Money donated to family with sick boys

MORE than 76,000 yuan (US$12,069) has been raised for Xu Ping'an and Xu Pingkang after their 36-year-old father sought help from the public to save the two brothers who both suffer from life-threatening diseases.

Locals came to the aid of the family and helped with the boys' medical bills after they saw the story reported in Shanghai Daily on Monday.

Shane Islam of the US state of Texas e-mailed Shanghai Daily yesterday and said he would like to donate 20,000 to 30,000 yuan for the family. The Rotary Club, a US-based non-profit organization, also called to offer help to the family.

On Tuesday, Shanghai Tongji Hospital said it could perform free surgery for the two-month-old younger brother, who suffers from congenital heart disease after his birth in September. The baby is expected to receive his surgery next week, said Chen Haibin, a hospital official.

Two months ago, Xu Xuebing welcomed the birth of his second son and expected the baby's umbilical cord stem cells could help save his eight-year-old brother, who has had leukemia since 2007. But his joy was short-lived when the baby was discovered to have heart disease.

The family, faced with huge medical bills, spent all their savings and borrowed to treat the older son in the past four years. The family now lives on the father's salary, about 1,000 yuan a month, still paid by the primary school where he worked in Shangrao, in eastern China's Jiangxi Province.

The couple were told that further treatment for Ping'an will cost at least 200,000 yuan, once a bone marrow match is found for the boy.

Shanghai Daily is organizing a visit to the family on Sunday. Readers wishing to meet the family can send their name and cellphone number to metro@shanghaidaily.com.

With donations pouring in, the family is gaining confidence about their future. Xu asked Shanghai Daily to express his gratitude to readers for caring and helping.

"I will record every donation we received and I want to say thank you to you all," said the father.
