Mooncake sales set to rocket
SALES of mooncakes this year are forecast to rise between 8 and 10 percent, the head of a trade group told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
“Sales are expected to pick up this year because the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday are very close together,” said Chen Fengwei, secretary-general of the Shanghai Confectionery Industry Association.
He didn’t explain how the proximity of the two holidays would affect sales.
Chen didn’t provide sales figures for the cakes, but it is generally accepted that they have been in decline since the government banned officials from purchasing luxury varieties as part of its frugality campaign.
The average price of mooncakes has risen this year, in some cases by as much as 0.50 yuan (8 US cents) per cake, Chen said.
This is due to the higher cost of raw materials, especially pork, which is a popular filling, he said.
The Peninsula Shanghai said its mooncake sales enjoy a significant increase this year. One type of its mooncakes has been sold out.
The prices of the mooncakes have slightly increased this year due to the rising labor cost and raw material, it said.
Healthier option is the trend of mooncakes this year, the hotel said, adding that its custard mooncakes, which are less oily and sugary, are popular amongst customers.
The Ritz-Carlton hotel in the Pudong New Area said it raised the price of its mooncakes by 10 percent this year, far above the inflation rate.
Local woman Su Chenjuan said she thinks so-called luxury brands are a waste of money, as much of the cost is wrapped up in the fancy packaging.
“The wrappers end up in the bin no matter how luxurious they are, so I buy mooncakes from established brands, which I know taste good and cost no more than 100 yuan a box,” she said.
