More copycat artwork torn down

TWO more sculptures suspected to be copies of works by overseas artists at Pudong New Area’s Dongchang Binjiang greenland by the Huangpu River have been torn down, the company in charge of the space said yesterday.
This follows the demolition in the same greenland on Wednesday of a copycat sculpture of a famous 1973 work called “Timepiece,” by British artist Wendy Taylor. Taylor had personally complained about the copy.
“All three statues have been destroyed now,” said an employee surnamed Gu with the Shenjiang branch of the Shanghai Real Estate Group, the manager of the space.
The two other sculptures came down after netizens pointed out the similarities to the overseas works after reading of the “Timepiece” case.
One sculpture resembled the iconic “Lute Being Played by Evert Taube,” a work by Willy Gordon, which has stood on the waterfront of Riddarholmen Island in Stockholm since 1990. Taube was a famous Swedish composer and singer.
The other was almost identical to the centerpiece statue at the Gloucester Fisherman’s Memorial in Massachusetts, in the United States, by English sculptor Leonard Craske and which dates back to 1925.
Gu said the Shanghai Real Estate Company was not to blame because the statues had been in place about 10 years, well before it assumed management of Dongchang Binjiang.
The sculptors of the Shanghai installations are not known and existing records do not include registration information for the works.
The Dongchang Binjiang greenland opened to the public 10 years ago.
