More fruits, and sweeter this year
LOCAL orchards should witness a higher yield of grapes and peaches this summer, with a sweeter taste compared with previous years because of favorable weather, the city’s greenery authorities said yesterday.
The recent continuously sunny and hot weather has accelerated the accumulation of sugar in fruits, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said.
Summer is the best time to taste fruits in Shanghai, and the list includes pear, peach and grape, the bureau said. In late June, Malu grape hit the market. This month, Nanhui peach ripened, and this week, Jinshan peach, Songjiang pear and Fengxian yellow peach will be available.
The sugar content of Xile grapes is 20, compared with the average 17 in previous years, while Nanhui peach also has a higher sugar content.
Due to the geography and climate of Shanghai, the major fruits are tangerine, peach, grape and pear. They are of good quality and rich variety with the help of a number of high technologies and planting skills.
The bureau announced yesterday 76 quality orchards which meet requirements of a pollution-free environment, planting procedures, infrastructure, staff, and fruit quality.
