More hot weather predicted
INTENSE heat will continue to grip the city for the rest of the week, the local weather authority said.
The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued an orange heat alert, the second highest alert on its three-tier system, at 1:39pm yesterday.
The mercury soared to 37.7 degrees at 3:45pm in downtown Xujiahui yesterday, setting a new high for the year and marking the sixth high-temperature day (when the mercury crosses 35 degrees) of summer.
The heatwave alert was lifted at 6:16pm.
Today will be cloudy with scattered afternoon showers, and a high of around 36 degrees.
It will be sunny from tomorrow, when the mercury will top out at 35 degrees.
Scattered downpours will hit the city on Sunday, when the maximum temperature will fall to 34 degrees.
