More leave plan for new dads
THE city's women federation wants local law makers to extend leave for new fathers taking care of babies and their wives from three days to 10 days.
Shi Qiuqin, the spokeswoman for the Shanghai Women's Federation, said the federation will submit the proposal to next week's Shanghai People's Congress and later to the National People's Congress.
The federation will suggest adding baby care leave for fathers to the local family regulations. As well it will suggest the National People's Congress encourage fathers to help with the raising of their children by revising the laws protecting women's rights and interests.
The Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences recently conducted a survey on how much time new fathers spend baby-sitting. It showed that 32 percent of city husbands and 24 percent of rural husbands did not have a day off in the first month after the baby's birth. Only 47 percent of the respondents took leave of more than three days during the period.
A total of 64 percent of city fathers and 54 percent of rural fathers said they wanted to have more time with their children but were too busy.
