Mosquito virus case is first for Shanghai
AN Indian air passenger has been diagnosed with Chikungunya fever, the first imported case in Shanghai, authorities said yesterday.
The virus is passed to humans by two species of mosquito and its symptoms include fever, rash and joint pain.
More than 1.9 million cases have been reported in India, Indonesia, the Maldives, Myanmar and Thailand, according to the Shanghai Airport Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.
The passenger took an Air India flight from Delhi to Pudong International Airport on August 20 and felt fine when she entered Shanghai, the bureau said.
Her body temperature was below 36.2 degrees when she was checked by an infrared sensor while passing through customs, which is below the alarm-triggering level, the bureau said.
But she later developed symptoms including fever, rash and joint pain, and sought medical attention at a hospital in Changning District.
The woman was successfully treated and discharged from hospital, according to the city's health authorities.
