Motorist jailed for evading check, injuring officer

A driver who knocked down a police motorcycle and injured a police patrol as he tried to dodge a road check was sentenced to four years in prison, the Minhang District People's Court said today.

Zheng Yingsheng, 31, was driving an unlicensed car along Zhongchun Road when the traffic police surnamed Wang beckoned him to stop for a routine check on June 30 last year.

The court said Zheng didn't stop but continued driving and Wang chased him to Qixin Road and asked Zheng to get out of the car. But Zheng suddenly backed the car and tried to steer away from the officer.

Wang made another attempt to block Zheng, who revved up the engine to speed away and knocked down Wang's motorcycle in the rush, the court said.

Zheng drove to Xinli Road and crashed into a police patrol car. Zheng abandoned his car and tried to escape from the scene.

When he was grabbed by the officer surnamed Zhang, Zheng attacked him and caused fractures in Zhang's right thigh. He was overpowered as more policemen arrived.
