Motorist uses WeChat to foil armed robber
A man charged with robbing a female motorist of more than 4,000 yuan (US$616) was captured by police after the victim told her boyfriend her location via WeChat, prosecutors in the Pudong New Area said yesterday.
The victim, surnamed Cai, was on her way home from work on January 22 when the suspect, surnamed Huang, opened the door of her car and got in near a shopping center in Caolu Town. Huang forced her to hand over 700 yuan and several credit cards at knifepoint, police said.
Huang was unsatisfied with the amount and forced Cai to ask her family to transfer some money to her, said police. Cai told them she had had an accident and needed cash. Meanwhile, she sent a message to her boyfriend telling him to call the police.
While they waited for the transfer, Huang took Cai to an ATM and made her withdraw 3,500 yuan. To give the police more time, Cai deliberately mistyped her passwords.
Huang later made Cai get in the backseat, where she used WeChat to tell her boyfriend where she was, enabling officers to track them down.
