Mozart heralds new grassland

XUHUI District will stage an open-air opera on newly opened grassland along Huangpu River on Sunday.

The Mozart classic “Don Juan,” with David Stern as the conductor, will be held at the Dong’an Road Grassland, which has been turned into the “Stage West Bund” for concerts and shows, according to the West Bund Group that takes charge of the development of the Xuhui riverside area.

The land covering 50,000 square meters at 3399 Longteng Avenue was formerly occupied by commercial facilities and offices, but was recovered by the city government as a reserved land for future development.

The group has opened the land temporarily, half of which is grassland, to the public for operas, concerts and other events.

The land will make its debut on Sunday for the Mozart opera. After that, an orchestra concert and food festival will be held in October. At other times, the land will be opened to the public as a park.

Tickets for Sunday’s opera, which begins at 7:30pm, cost from 20 yuan (US$2.90) to 150 yuan.
