Murder charge for senior man
THE old man who stabbed his 88-year-old foster mother to death and injured his former daughter-in-law at the end of last month at an apartment in downtown Jing'an District was arrested yesterday.
The man surnamed Mao, 63, was charged with murder by the Jing'an District Prosecutors' Office.
Sun Liwen, a prosecutor in charge of the case, said the killing was caused by a family conflict over property.
Mao's son and former daughter-in-law, surnamed Hu, 32, lived in an apartment in Deyi Residential Building, where the victim surnamed Liu was allegedly killed. Liu owned the apartment, prosecutors said.
Liu filed a lawsuit to the district court in January, asking the court to rule Mao's son and Hu to move out. The court ruled in Liu's favor.
Mao believed Liu won the case with Hu's help and suspected she wanted to embezzle the property.
Mao then learned Liu planned to sell the apartment to Hu as the two women agreed to meet on April 27. Mao wanted to persuade his foster mother to give up the deal and decided to kill the two women if she disagreed, according to prosecutors.
Mao visited her on the morning of April 27, carrying a knife and a rope. He tried to persuade the foster mother to allow his son and Hu to continue to live in the apartment. Liu refused.
According to prosecutors, Mao then stabbed his foster mother in the abdomen and strangled her with a rope when she cried for help. He stabbed her again, prosecutors alleged.
He then waited in the apartment for Hu. She arrived in the afternoon. Soon after she entered the room, Mao stabbed her in the stomach, prosecutors said. Hu then tried to escape and Mao chased after her with the knife. She slipped near the elevator and Mao tried to stab her again, but she was saved by other people in the building, according to prosecutors. Hu was sent to hospital and doctors said she had only minor wounds. Mao was caught soon afterward.
