Mystery of bogus certificates
POLICE are trying to discover who apparently dumped more than 50 counterfeit property ownership certificates on a city riverbank.
Fake property certificates are sometimes used in applications for city residence permits.
The certificates were found by a sanitation worker at the bank of Guilin Road No. 2 Bridge in Xuhui District on Tuesday afternoon.
He found a handbag lying in the grass, inside which were 52 property ownership certificates.
Following checks with the city housing management authority, police confirmed that these were fake.
Officers are now studying surveillance camera footage for clues about who left the documents, related to properties worth tens of millions of yuan, by the river.
Anyone who is found producing counterfeit certificates faces a jail term of up to three years.
