National Day celebrations start early in People鈥檚 Square

SHANGHAI attractions were packed with tourists on yesterday’s National Day, the 65th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Many chose to celebrate early — at 6am — by attending a flag-raising ceremony in People’s Square.
“This is our way to wish the mother country a very happy birthday,” said a student spectator. “Seeing the flag rising makes me proud of China.”
As rush hour approached, crowds started to gather at the Bund. In addition to the usual view of the Lujiazui skyline, visitors also saw four police helicopters, with a 6.1-meter national flag attached to the lead aircraft, flying above the Huangpu River.
Two helicopters sprayed colored mist in a routine that has been a hallmark of National Day in the city since 2009.
Downtown tourism attractions and ancient towns and water towns in suburban districts saw large numbers of visitors.
The Oriental Pearl TV Tower saw over 30,000 visitors and Fengjing Ancient Town in Jinshan District was visited by 46,500 tourists.
