National logistics lab aims to end the bottlenecks

CHINA’S first national logistics laboratory was set up in Shanghai over the weekend. It will focus on unmanned courier delivery and other artificial intelligence services.

The National Engineering Laboratory for Logistic Information Technology, approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, was launched at the headquarters of local YTO Express in Qingpu District.

YTO and the other founding members of the lab, including China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, state-owned National Heavy Duty Truck Group and Shanghai Internet of Things Co, will focus on the bottleneck problems facing the logistic and courier industries, said Gao Hongfeng, director with China Express Association.

The lab aims to increase the delivery efficiency, cut the costs, improve the services and ensure the safety of domestic courier firms, Gao said. Other targets included integrating logistic resources, developing intelligent equipment, creating industry standards and training professionals, he added.

“The logistic equipment of Chinese courier firms is lagging behind with low automation,” said Yu Weijiao, chairman of YTO Express, who also serves as the director of the lab council. The courier firm planned to invest more than 100 million yuan (US$14.5 million) to support the lab’s research.

The national lab will study equipment, transport patterns and customer services. For instance, said Yu, unmanned driving, drone delivery, automatic warehouses, artificial intelligence customer services would be developed in the lab.

The lab planned to work out five innovative facilities for courier delivery and storage within three years, such as a cargo positioning and tracking system.

The new facility was also expected to help enable Shanghai’s ambition to become an innovation center in science and technology, said Xia Yi, director of the Shanghai Postal Administration.
