Netizen sued for 鈥榮will oil鈥 video

INSTANT noodle giant Master Kong is suing a Shanghai web user for spreading a video clip online in which a Taiwan tour guide claims the company uses “swill oil” in making its products.
The Shanghai office of Master Kong, part of Taiwan-based Ting Hsin International Group, said yesterday that it has informed Shanghai police and is taking legal action against the person identified as Ke Xiaoyang who is alleged to have spread the video.
It is seeking 1.5 million yuan (US$237,000) in compensation, said Master Kong.
According to Sina Weibo microblog details, Ke is marketing director of Shanghai Oufu Communication Technology Company.
He is alleged to have been the first person to post the video clip, on his Weibo account on August 2.
In the clip, a Taiwan tour guide tells visitors from China’s mainland to boycott all Ting Hsin products, saying that it’s involved in a swill oil scandal.
The video was reposted more than 80,000 times a day before it was deleted from Ke’s account.
Shanghai Television reported that city prosecutors has received the charges, and Ke’s employer Shanghai Oufu Communication Technology Company is among four defendants.
Swill oil is recovered from the drains outside restaurants and illegally recycled for human use.
Last September, Master Kong admitted that one of its noodle products was made with “poor quality edible oil” and was fined in Taiwan.
