Never-before-seen fairy spotted in Shanghai park

A RARE migratory bird was spotted recently in Gongqing Forest Park in Shanghai’s Yangpu District.

The fairy pitta, which migrates to Borneo from Korea, Japan, Taiwan and China’s mainland, has never before been seen in the city, park official Tang Wenbin said yesterday.

The bird is classed as “vulnerable” by BirdLife International, with probably no more than 10,000 of them existing around the world.

Deforestation in its breeding grounds is blamed for the rapid fall in numbers, with the problem compounded by trapping in some areas.

The fairy pitta has state-level protection in China, and its appearance in Gongqing is probably due to the creation of a more welcoming environment for migratory species, Tang said.

“In recent years, we have carried out a lot of environmental rehabilitation and improvement work in the park, including putting up more than 1,000 small nesting boxes,” he said.

“We’ve also added a lot more plants and trees to provide a better source of food and to provide protection from predators for smaller birds like the fairy pitta,” he said.

Gongqing Forest Park is one of the best places for bird-watching in Shanghai, with more than 108 species recorded in the area since 2006, according to official figures.
