New Botanical Garden Opens
CHENSHAN Botanical Garden in Songjiang District, the city's second botanical garden, let in the public for the first time yesterday. It's now open from 8am to 5:30pm every day, although some sections remain closed where the plants aren't ready.
Near Sheshan Hill, the 2.07-square-kilometer garden now has about 9,000 breeds of plants, and plans to collect more than 30,000 breeds. They would place the garden among the top 10 such gardens in the world, officials said yesterday.
The admission price is 40 yuan (US$5.86) - 20 yuan for seniors 70 and older. When the garden is fully open, perhaps early next year, the price may rise to 70 yuan.
"The garden has not only the function of sightseeing, but also of scientific research," said Liu Weiguang, of the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Administrative Bureau.
